Anatomy of the penis

How is the penis structured?

The human penis is quite a remarkable organ. Without any bones (some animals have a penis bone - but humans do not) and only through indirect muscle action does it become hard at the right time and then relax again. The structure of the penis

Alongside the scrotum, the penis is one of the external male sex organs. The testicles are defined as internal sex organs because they form inside the body during embryonic development or only sink into the scrotum afterwards. Anatomically, the penis is divided into three parts: Penis root, penis shaft and penis tip (glans). At the base of the penis, the sexual organ is connected to the pelvis. The muscles at the base of the penis reduce the outflow of blood from the penis during an erection. There are two corpora cavernosa along the shaft of the penis, which are responsible for the erection of the penis. They are protected by a stretchable layer of tissue known as the tunica albuginea or simply tunica. It ensures that the penis retains its shape, which is important for sexual intercourse, even during an erection. Where the two halves of the corpus cavernosum penis have grown together during embryonic development, a dark pigmented line can be recognised on the underside, the penile suture. In female embryos, however, the same anlage develops into the labia minora. The glans also has its own erectile tissue, the corpus spongiosum glandis. Although it enlarges the glans during an erection, it remains soft and does not harden like the rest of the penis shaft. A separate muscle surrounds the corpus spongiosum glandis, which transports the ejaculate through the urethra during orgasm. Thousands of exposed nerve endings make the glans a particularly erogenous zone. The glans is connected to the foreskin via the frenulum (foreskin frenulum), which normally covers the glans completely or partially in the non-erect (and uncircumcised) penis to protect it from external influences. There are also numerous nerves here that provide sexual pleasure. The frenulum is perhaps the most sexually sensitive part of the man. Paraplegic men can even achieve an orgasm or a "near-orgasm" by stimulating the frenulum, even if the stimulus conduction from the penis to the spinal cord and brain as well as the erectile function are restricted.

The erection of the penis is mainly caused by the two erectile tissue in the penis shaft, which fill with blood when aroused. The outflow of blood is prevented by muscles on the pubic bone. The erectile tissue is a tight network of veins with countless cavities. The corpus cavernosum of the penis is fused to the bony pelvis with two limbs. The two halves join at the shaft of the penis to form a corpus cavernosum. It is not supplied with blood when not erect. The urethra is surrounded by the so-called corpus spongiosum penis. In contrast to the corpus spongiosum of the penis, the corpus spongiosum of the urethra is supplied with blood at all times. It prevents the urethra from being squeezed by the erection. The anatomy of the penis ensures perfect erectile function - this is important for the survival of any species, as an erection is a prerequisite for sexual intercourse.
